“De Zorgtafel Bouwensputseweg” - A Social Farm in the Netherlands"

A social farm supports people who are physically or mentally disadvantaged in a safe, caring and inclusive environment. Very different from traditional hospitals, a person can choose to participate in a range of activities based on their interests, such as animal care, gardening or indoor hobbies. The focus of a social farm is to encourage participants, in a non clinical setting to socialise, gain confidence and build relationships. They also support people to live ordinary lives, to integrate as part of their community, and develop their potential. Without this type of support, people with these disadvantages are often excluded from societies, and at times distanced from their families.

Annelies van de Waarsenburg, manages a social farm based on this model in the province Zeeland in the Netherlands. “De Zorgtafel Bouwensputsewegj”, as the property is named in Dutch, covers over half a hectare of land in the rural village of Wolphaartsdijk. Passionate about caring for people with mental health difficulties, her vision inspires her team of qualified professionals who support the participants of the farm. The social farm of Annelies, with their human approach to care, has received outstanding recognition from a local hospital. They have been amazed by the significant progress of participants, who enjoy a wide range of farming activities and therapeutic programs. Hospitals with classic methods often have not experienced the same results.

Adrian Kreter, a dynamic entrepreneur, was also inspired by the passion and determination to develop the social farm when he met Annelies . With her experience as a psychiatric and geriatric nurse, and also of social farms, Annelies had several years to create her vision. Adrian was convinced by this vision and provided the financial means to secure the land, property and animals. Since September 2022, Annelies has become the owner of the centre and leads her team with dedication. To assist Annelies in the development of her social farm, Adrian’s team also provides on-going support.
